I am a Chartered Counselling Psychologist with 17 years experience of working in the mental health sector and 8 years working as a qualified psychologist.
I have been working as a Counselling Psychologist since 2009 and have worked across a number of NHS settings. This includes providing a psychology service in GP practices, working in a Community Mental Health Team, a Psychological Therapies service and a specialist Crisis Intervention Service. Alongside my NHS work I have also been working in private practice since 2011.
My approach to therapy is always collaborative and therefore I tend to draw on a range of therapies to best suit each individuals needs. During my training and subsequence experience working in the NHS and private practice, I have gained a thorough knowledge and understanding of Attachment/ Psychodynamic informed therapy, Mindfulness Based Approaches, Compassion Focused Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
Therapy may involve working on a clearly defined problem area and may be time-limited. Alternatively, it may be more helpful to work in an open-ended contract in which you can explore your issues further. Hopefully, therapy can offer a way to gain a different perspective and find a way forward by having a greater awareness and understanding of yourself. Whichever approach we decide to take I believe it is helpful to regularly review the therapy to see if it is proving to be helpful for you.
Research has shown that the therapeutic relationship is crucial in determining how helpful therapy can be. Central to my approach is a focus on the therapeutic relationship, which is collaborative and involves working together on an agreed focus for therapy. It is important that you feel that you can trust the therapist you decide to work with and sometimes this can mean seeing more than one therapist before you find the “right fit”.
In addition to providing individual psychological therapy I also run Mindfulness day retreats & 8- week Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy courses (delivered in both a group format and also on a one to one basis). This course is particularly helpful for individuals seeking help for depression, anxiety and stress.
